Useful Information for San Leandro CA
San Leandro, CA is known for having a very mild climate year round. The first visit by Europeans was in the year 1772, and consisted of a Spanish soldier and a Catholic priest. The earliest settlements in the area were two large rancheros, bringing in livestock and eventually agriculture. Among the earliest settlers was a large Portuguese population, as well as laborers from Hawaii.
These two groups established farms and businesses in the area, and accounted for nearly 2/3rds of the earliest population.
San Leandro was one of many cities in California that had restrictive covenants barring property owners from selling to African Americans and other minorities. As a result of this covenant, by 1960 the city was almost 100% white, while the neighboring city of Oakland had a large African American population. A subsequent Supreme Court ruling found the covenants to be unenforceable by the State of California, and by the 1980’s the population began to diversify. By the 2010 census, Asian Americans were now the plurality, and whites were in the minority.
