      Useful Information for Los Altos CA

      Los Altos, CA started out as a land grant from the Spanish court, and today is part of the greater Silicon Valley. Early residents of this sleepy California town would not even recognize how their city has evolved and changed over time.

      One of the most famous residents of Los Altos had to be Sarah Winchester, widow of the man who invented the Winchester rifle. Sarah felt the burden of the souls who lost their lives to this deadly gun, and had been advised by a spiritualist that as long as her house was under construction, she would live. If she stopped building, she would die. Thus came the strange creation of the Winchester Mystery House, still being worked on until her last day of life. Some doors led nowhere, opening onto a steep drop that could prove deadly. And in the attic were stored tiffany windows and other treasures never used.

      Some of her land was sold to the Peninsula Interurban Railway in 1906, the same year as the Great earthquake and fire.

      The new railroad and mild California climate attracted droves of settlers and businesses to the area, In 1952, the residents of Los Altos voted to incorporate.and are now part of the Silicon Valley community, renowned worldwide for their high-tech innovations.
