Useful Information for Hayward CA
Hayward, CA is located in the East Bay area of Alameda County, and is the sixth largest city in the San Francisco Bay Area and the third largest in Alameda County. An earthquake in 1868 severely damaged the area, and led to the Hayward Fault being named after the city. The town itself was chartered under the name of Haywards in 1876, but the name was officially changed to Hayward in 1880.
The earliest economy for the city was agriculture and tourism, helped by the establishment of a railroad line in the late 1800′s. The agriculture business drew many Japanese to the area, and were interned during WW II. The war’s end led to both a population and economic boom, and many who were in the area for the manufacturing of war materials stayed.
The city today is home to the California State University, East Bay campus, and currently has three sister cities located in Japan, Afghanistan, and Portugal. Gold Medalist Figure Skater Kristi Yamaguchi was born here.
