Useful Information for Burlingame CA
Useful Information for Burlingame CA
Burlingame, CA, was named after Anson Burlingame, a US minister to China. Burlingame is one of the few cities in the area that did not derive its name from its Spanish history. Like many of the other cities in the area, Burlingame was originally settled by wealthy San Franciscans looking for either a principal residence in milder climate than the city, or a summer home in a more temperate area. The Great Earthquake of 1906 led many to leave the ruined city and move south, towards many of the small cities and towns originally populated by the wealthy in search of temperate climates. 1906 and 1907 saw many lots sold there, and Burlingame was incorporated in 1908.
Burlingame is known widely as a City of Trees because of the large number of trees within the city limits. The city government takes the nickname and the protection of the trees seriously. In 1908, the Burlingame board of trustees passed an ordinance prohibiting cutting, injuring, or destroying their trees.
